Catalpa bignonioides (Southern Catalpa Tree) apprx 30-40ft tall, bright green large heart shaped leaves; June-July summer blooms literally cover the tree and are a very attractive white with gold and purple accents. The leaves actually secrete a nectar that attracts the catalpa sphinx moth. In the south, just about every old "homeplace" has a catalpa tree. My grandparents have one, and it is called the "fish bait tree." The caterpillars are great fish bait! You can use fresh caterpillars or the caterpillars can be frozen to be used at a later date.

Southern Catalpa Tree
I needed a tree that could take drought, soaked soil (in spring), clay soil, and full blazing sun without growing too large; this tree fit the bill. In my neighborhood right now (early September after a month of 90+ weather with very little rain) Catalpa is one of the few trees thriving in people's yards. It's an unusual tree, but clearly tough as nails. I'm looking forward to it beautiful flowers and hopefully caterpillars for the birds. I wanted to buy from MailOrderNatives as I needed a small plant for easy transplanting and the price could not be beat! I received a lovely healthy 3 footer and the transplanting took so well, I haven't seen a wrinkled leaf!

Tree arrived looking very healthy

Looked like it wasn't going to make it.
But I was fooled these trees have really taken off and they are looking good. I can't wait to get the worms on them so I can go fishing!

I will absolutely use this company for future tree/shrub orders. My husband is thrilled I ordered it for him.
