    Fragaria virginiana Native Strawberry

Posted by Sandra Egan on Dec 14th 2023

This native strawberry plant has multiplied beyond belief! I'm in north central Florida zone 9a and strawberries are doing GREAT here. I first planted 'Albion' which is zoned perennials in zones 4-7 which has gone through HEAT of summer and a VERY COLD winter and it was unscathed in the freezing 22 degree temp. we had here in Florida. Though it is Dec.14, the date today, the Albion has just started blooming (it produced A LOT last winter (I planted it late last summer) and the native strawberries haven't started blooming yet. Just measured the native strawberries from ONE plant I bought from Mail Order Natives and it's 8ft by 7ft!!! I received this native plant the first days of April this year 2023. Looking forward to seeing how this native is going to produce and taste (it multiplies in a crowded way). I just planted Sweet Charleys, the native is in between the Albion and the S Charleys... for a beautiful evergreen ground cover! (I have mushroom compost amended soil).

I have yet to have any issues with the plants that I’ve received. Always happy with the size, health and packaging of my plants.

I planted 3 in a shadier spot. We will see how they hold up over the winter. Packaging was with great care.

    Beautiful plants, carefully packed

Very pleased with all of the plants I received from Mail Order Nurseries -- all are quite large for mail-order, and all arrived in great shape. These native strawberries have settled very nicely into my mixed border, where I'm hoping to see them multiply and provide a wildlife-friendly groundcover beneath my shrubs.

I purchased 2 of these plants. They were very well packaged and had not wilted. Both plants were large with runners. I am looking forward to any berries that the squirrels decide not to eat!
